The Benjamin Institute
Our new organizational structure has been developed in response to the growing complexity of our operation. We want to make it easy for our customers to determine how to contact the appropriate arm of our organization with their request.
BENJAMIN'S PARK MEMORIAL
CHAPEL
This is the original and core business of the Benjamin Group. Since Henry Benjamin joined a Chevra Kadisha in Toronto's Jewish community in the early 1900s, our family has served the funeral and burial needs of Toronto's Jewish community. We remain committed to upholding the highest standard of care in service to our community far into the future.

THE BENJAMIN FOUNDATION
In 1983, we established the Benjamin Foundation to respond to a need expressed by the families we were dealing with. While they were in deep mourning, they were too overwhelmed to know where to tell their family and friends to direct memorial donations. The Foundation enables a family to hold memorial donations until they are ready to distribute them in a way that properly honours the deceased (usually four to six months after the death). The Benjamin family contributes at least two thirds of the foundation's annual administrative costs ($100,000-150,000) and can provide guidance to families on creating a meaningful memorial gift.

BENJAMIN'S LANDMARK MONUMENTS
In 1994, we went into the monument business in response to requests from clients of the Chapel who wanted us to continue our standard of service right through the full year of mourning. We have developed a reputation for quality workmanship and competitive prices that has spread beyond the Jewish community. Since 2000, Cardinal Funeral Homes has been referring its customers to us and we now serve the monument needs of all Torontonians, creating tributes appropriate to the deceased's religion, culture and language. Architects and designers have also come to see us as a preferred supplier of custom stone and bronze work.

BENJAMIN'S LIFECYCLE
FINANCIAL SERVICES
This new company is, like our other ventures, a natural outgrowth of the funeral chapel. For many years now, members of the community have asked us to help them arrange their funerals in advance of need, in order to spare their families the job of doing so at the time they are grieving. For many financially savvy individuals, the benefits of pre-paying are part of good estate planning (once a funeral is pre-paid, there is full inflation protection, so it will never cost the family more money). Increasingly, we find, the baby boomers like to plan the details of their funeral, including any special instructions (such as how to seat feuding relatives).
As people live longer and travel more, there is also a growing demand for travel insurance, to cover the often onerous cost and logistics of returning a body home for burial.
No matter whether individuals were motivated to contact us to spare their loved ones from added stress, to plan their finances effectively, or to find peace of mind in making their own decisions, we decided we could provide a better community service by grouping funeral-related financial planning together in one corporate structure. This is a new idea, and we would like to hear your ideas about how we should expand this organizational concept.

THE BENJAMIN INSTITUTE
For many years, we have spoken to community and student groups and led tours of the Chapel. We also lecture at the funeral director program at Humber College and as part of the continuing education program of the Jewish Funeral Directors of America. By grouping all our outreach activities (tours, lectures, publications) under The Benjamin Institute, we believe it will be easier for people to access our services and our knowledge of Jewish funeral rituals and mourning customs.
